The Director of Estimating will lead the estimating function for a growing heavy civil construction organization. This role is responsible for overseeing all estimating activities, developing standardized processes, mentoring estimating staff, and ensuring the preparation of accurate, competitive bids for a variety of infrastructure projects. The Director of Estimating will lead the estimating function for a growing heavy civil construction organization. This role is responsible for overseeing all estimating activities, developing standardized processes, mentoring estimating staff, and ensuring the preparation of accurate, competitive bids for a variety of infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate is a strategic leader with extensive experience in heavy civil construction estimating and a proven ability to manage teams while supporting business growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop the estimating team, providing guidance and professional development for estimators at all levels.
- Oversee the preparation of detailed cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects, from conceptual budgets through final bid submissions.
- Develop and implement standardized estimating processes, tools, and best practices to improve accuracy, consistency, and efficiency.
- Direct quantity takeoffs, production rate analyses, and cost evaluations for both self-performed and subcontracted work.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers to obtain competitive and accurate pricing.
- Lead bid strategy meetings, estimate reviews, and final proposal submissions.
- Evaluate project risks, constructability considerations, and market conditions to support bid strategy and go/no-go decisions.
- Partner with operations and business development teams by providing conceptual budgets and preconstruction support for prospective projects.
- Ensure estimates align with project scope, schedule, and organizational objectives.
- Promote continuous improvement and collaboration throughout the estimating process.
- 10–20+ years of experience in heavy civil construction estimating.
- Strong background estimating infrastructure projects, including highways, bridges, earthwork, underground utilities, drainage, and site development.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing estimating teams.
- Proficiency with construction estimating software, preferably HCSS HeavyBid or comparable estimating platforms.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred;equivalent industry experience will also be considered.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
